If you sell new lead-acid car batteries, you must accept old ones for recycling. This rule applies to stores and distributors. They must accept batteries with six or more volts. If not recycled, these batteries must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Auto parts stores and car repair shops must follow this law.

Stores must accept up to two used lead batteries per month from any person for free. It is illegal to throw these batteries in the trash. Businesses must put up signs to tell customers that throwing away car batteries is illegal.
