Locksmith License
You need a Locksmith License to fix, service, install, check and open and close locks. The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) gives this license.

Complete the basic individual license application:
Download the application form. -
Submit photo identification (ID:)
Acceptable forms of ID include:- US-issued driver's license or non-driver's license ID
- Government-issued license or permit
- Passport
- Green card (alien card)
- City, State or federal employee ID card
- Municipal ID card

Submit a current color passport-size photograph:
You can be photographed at the DCWP Licensing Center at no cost. You can also upload your photo online. -
Submit proof of locksmith qualifications:
Acceptable proof includes one of the following:- Two Certificates Recommending an Applicant for a Locksmith License, signed by New York City-licensed locksmiths
- A letter from Local Union No. 74 Service Employees International Union indicating successful completion of a locksmithing course at a school licensed by the New York State Education Department and one Certificate Recommending an Applicant for a Locksmith License
- A certificate from a school licensed by the New York State Education Department indicating successful completion of a locksmithing course

Schedule an appointment with IdentoGO to be fingerprinted:
Visit uenroll.identogo.com. Enter Service Code 1585FZ and Agency ID (numbers only from your Application Number - for example, for 1234567-2023-AHIC, enter 12345672023). Follow the instructions and pay the required fees. -

Fees depend on when you apply.- $100: License fee for new applications from June 1 of odd-numbered years to November 30 of odd-numbered years
- $75: License fee for new applications from December 1 of odd-numbered years to May 31 of even-numbered years
- $50: License fee for new applications from June 1 of even-numbered years to November 30 of even-numbered years
- $25: License fee for new applications from December 1 of even-numbered years to May 31 of odd-numbered years
- Fingerprint processing fee
- Non-refundable 2% convenience fee for paying with a credit card

- Check (payable to NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, accepted only for in-person application submissions)
- Money order (payable to NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, accepted only for in-person application submissions)
- Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover card)

Notification by mail: You will get a letter about your license application status within two weeks after DCWP gets all needed materials.
- If your application is approved: DCWP will send you your license.
- If more information is needed: DCWP will send you a letter with instructions. You must send the needed materials within 10 days. If you do not, your application will be denied.
- If your application is denied: DCWP will tell you why and how to reapply.

License validity: Licenses last for up to two years. They expire on May 31 of odd-numbered years.

Informing DCWP of changes: If your information changes, tell the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). Call 311 or visit the DCWP Licensing Center. DCWP suggests calling 311 to check if you need to visit a Center. You can only visit the Licensing Center if you have a disability and need to make an in-person visit. Compliance with laws: Follow all New York City laws and rules. This includes the Consumer Protection Law and Rules. You can find them on the Public Access Portal.

Print the Confirmation Page
After submitting an application online, print a copy of the Confirmation Page. The Confirmation Page will list the additional steps and materials required to complete the application. These materials are also listed above and must be submitted within five business days of filing the application online if they were not uploaded as part of the online application submission.
