Nurses must be registered with the New York State Department of Education as a Registered Nurse (RN).

RNs can perform care and diagnose and treat responses, but cannot make diagnoses themselves. RNs must work with a supervising physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, or other specialist.

Applicants must meet educational and experience requirements, and must pass an exam. People who have not taken the exam to be an RN can get a limited permit. The permit allows one to practice under the supervision of a licensed RN, with the permission of the RN's employer. Applicants with a license in another state can have their license endorsed for New York.
