All businesses wishing to operate a small arms firing range in New York City must have a Small Arms Firing Range Permit issued by the New York City Police Department. Small arms firing ranges are places where individuals can shoot rifles and pistols at different types of targets such as trap, skeet, or paper. Small arms firing ranges do not allow the use of .50 caliber or larger ammunition.

Applicants are subject to a background check that includes fingerprints.
A Fire Department permit is required if more than 200 rounds of ammunition will be stored on the premises.
The application fee is $75.00. The fingerprint fee for new applicants is $94.25 per individual being fingerprinted.

- Certified Check (made payable to the New York City Police Department)
- Money Order (made payable to the New York City Police Department)
- Other (Postal money order, made out to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.)
A complete list of names and address of all persons who have access to and use the range must be maintained at the range, showing date and hour each individual person used the range to discharge small arms.
Designees must comply with all applicable Federal laws and regulations.
Owners must comply with all Fire Department regulations relating to storage and possession of ammunition and powder.
No person will be permitted to discharge a pistol or revolver in a designated small arms range unless they possess a valid handgun license.
Records, books, and a roster or membership must be available to for inspection by authorized members of the Police Department during hours when the range is open.
Any violation of these regulations will be cause for suspension or revocation of designation.

After submitting all application materials all owners and partners must be fingerprinted at the same precinct where the application was submitted.
The NYPD will notify the applicant of acceptance or rejection by mail.
If the application is approved, the applicant will receive a license by mail
